Dusty stood a few steps away, watching the many failed attempts at scaling the tree. She reasoned she could get up into the branches in the span of just a few moments, as opposed to Freja's failed efforts.
"Er...you need a hand or somethin'?" Dusty tilted her head as yet another attempt at getting up to the birds resulted with Freja sliding back down.

Freja once again fell on the ground in between Dusty's legs, she looked up with a happy grin and nodded. "Yes that will do..."she said lifting herself up and dusting off her clothes. "You know how to climb I suppose?"Freja asked.

"Alright then." Dusty stood beneath the lowest branch possible and clasped her fingers together. "I'll give ya a boost. Push ya on up so ya can get a hold of that there branch."
She nodded her head up towards the branch in question. Sure, she could climb trees. But that wouldn't help her new...she supposed she could call the crazy girl a friend, get up into the tree.
This was one of the stranger days she had had, so far. Even factoring in the Calla and her wolf just strolling into a tavern. All that aside, Dusty prepared herself for the addition of Freja's weight, so she could apply the necessary force.

Freja stood up and dusted herself off once again. After taking a step back she suddenly ran up to Dusty and jumped on her hands sending herself flying into the tree. "Wheeee~"she squealed landing on a branch where tons of birds took off flying.
Freja looked to the left and right of her, disappointed that all of the birds had flew off but was happy to notice one remained. It was a small baby bird. Freja began to scoot herself nearer to it but it tried to walk away. "Don't be afraid, you were the only one who didn't leave me you know."
Freja eventually grabbed the bird and held it in her hand, patting it's small head with ease. "You were the only one who didn't leave me..."she repeated again,"...that's why I have to make sure you don't leave me when the time comes..."
Freja suddenly snapped the bone in one of the birds wings, it began to chirp and struggle in her hands but her grip continued to remain firm, she then pressed her thumb down hard on the other wing making the bone in that one snap as well.

That was not quite what Dusty had intended, but it was nonetheless effective. Even if it did end with the detective landing square on her backside with an "Oof!"
Above her, Freja was making "friends". While most of the birds had taken off with the sudden appearance of the strange woman, one unfortunate creature did make an escape. It, too, had fallen into Freja's grasp.
The snaps of the wings did not reach Dusty's ears as she collected herself up from the grass. As she brushed off any remaining blades of grass, she looked up at Freja as she cradled small bird. It was an awkward looking way of holding it.
"One o' the little fellas still hangin' out up there?" she asked.

"You could say that..."Freja grinned as she jumped down from the tree with ease. (Which made one wonder if she really needed Dusty's help to begin with) Her hands were wrapped around the bird where Dusty couldn't see it and she patted the bird's small fluffy head.
"Tweet, tweet~"she said, then opened up her hands to show the bird to Dusty. It's eyes had begun to become blank, it twitched in her hands and was in obvious pain. "I'm not very good at giving names..."Freja gave an apologetic smile,"So tell me. What's a good name for a bird?"

"Damn!" exclaimed an understandably surprised Dusty. After Freja's nimble decent, the detective finally got a look at the poor little fella. With two obviously broken wings, the chirping bird was in it's way out. What she was looking at was a soon-to-be-deceased critter.
"Uh, I don't think he's lookin' too good." she said, then looked up with an arched eyebrow, "Did...did you break it's wings? I mean, the poor guy don't look like he's gonna make it."

"What's wrong?"Freja asked, she walked closer towards Dusty. "He'll be fine, don't worry. I'll take care of him..."she insisted,"Besides I had to break his wings or else he would've flown away..."Freja looked down at the small bird.
She seemed like such a caring almost mother like figure towards it, from the way she stroked it's feathers and spoke softly but there was definitely something...off about it all. Of course the dieing bird twitching in her hands probably helped with that feeling."
"We'll just take it to an animal Doctor, and It'll be all better soon!"Freja smiled at Dusty, convinced she could make the better return to normal again.

'Probably easier ways o' doin' that'
Is what Dusty almost said, but decided to keep that thought to herself. She was dealing with a clearly damaged individual. So, perhaps they could take it to a pet store. Maybe they could even do something, if all they would be able to do was help kill it in a more timely manner.
"Yeah, how 'bout we go get it checked out then." she concurred, "You know where ta go?"
But Dusty was still not sure if the bird would even make it. Despite the caring tone that was coming out in Freja's voice, she doubted the blonde would be able to keep it alive for very long.

Freja subconsciously knew the bird would not be able to make it. While it was something she had pushed into the back of her head the better part of her knew other wise and that Dusty had been correct, it was best to kill it. So Freja placed the bird in Dusty's hand.
"You take the bird to the animal doctor,"she smiled and turned around, refusing to watch the cowboy kill the bird. "I'll wait here until you get back OK?"she said over her shoulder and walked up to the tree, humming to herself and placing her hands behind her back.

"Right...I'll do that." Dusty took the bird in her hands, as Freja turned and headed back to the tree. It seemed the unspoken truth that had been hanging in the air now left the detective with the job of bringing the injured animal away.
'Man, what a day....' Dusty turned and left the park, wondering what she had just gotten herself into. Sure, it was a mundane task. But, the events that surrounded it were some of the oddest. It would have been easy to brush it all off. Especially since she had witnessed more bizarre encounters during her service in the Golden Canyon.
The Bloodthornes had thrown a lot her way. And in comparison, her current errand was on a much smaller scale. But still, that had all been during war. She understood the reasons. This was a puzzle that would take far longer to solve. If she even wanted to solve it.
As Dusty mulled over events past and present, she walked along Rue Coupole. Finally, she found a pet shop. The little bird's chirping had quieted some. Whatever the odds had been that it would be fixed up were pretty much gone. But it had been a long shot to begin with.
She entered the shop and headed right for the counter, "Uh...'scuse me! My buddy's bird is pretty banged up. An', uh...well, he ain't lookin' too good."

The man behind the counter was old, with gray hair, and large glasses, he looked up at Dusty, his face was blank but when he saw the unfortunate bird in her hands he understood immediately what had happened. "Wait here..."he sighed taking the bird out of her hands and heading to the back of the shop.
A few minutes passed by. The shop was filled with cages featuring all sorts of animals, puppies, bunnies, fish, birds and even a snake or two. A few inpatient people had lined up behind Dusty awaiting for the shop-keeper to arrive again and tapped their feet irritably.
Eventually the man came back out, he showed Dusty the small bird and it seemed to have some sort of green tape wrapped around it to hold it wings together. "Hydrate it,"he said simply placing it back in her hands. "And be more careful next time."

Dusty blinked, genuinely surprised. She had not expected the bird to make it out of the endeavor alive. But, there it was. Tapped up and ready to go. Dusty took the animal back in her hand. Dusty took it back in her hands and stepped aside, allowing the line to continue it's way towards the old man.
Now, a new dilemma was in her lap. The bird certainly wouldn't survive much longer in Freja's care, she was almost certain of that. But, now what could she do? She'd be expected back at the park, soon.
Handing it back over was just as good as killing it right now. And Dusty wasn't sure she had the heart for either option, now that it's wings were mended. Today just wasn't intending on being easy on Dusty.

Oddly enough as soon as Dusty had stepped out of the shop there was Freja standing there, just standing, and she had a wide smile on her face. "You fixed the bird..."her voice seemed shocked. In a way,Freja was shocked, she had expected Dusty to kill it.
Freja walked over to Dusty and patted the nervous bird's head,"Look at all that tape on it. I hope it doesn't suffocate it.."she said, then looked back up at Dusty. "What did the old man say about the bird? Did he use any kind of medicine?"

Blue eyes shot open in surprise. She certainly hadn't expected this. She didn't even notice that she had been followed. Perhaps, she had gotten a little too lost in thought. Either way, her surprise continued. The way Freja was acting and sounded, it almost seemed as if she could actually nurse the bird back to health.
"Uh...yeah..." she said, "I thought that's what the doc was gonna do to. Guess the little guy wasn't as far as I thought he was. The old guy said ya just needed to hydrate 'im an' 'be more careful'....his words."
With the taped wings, the small critter was looking to be in better spirits. Or at least not rapping on death's door as it had been a minute ago.
"An', I'm pretty sure that tape'll be just fine. Oughtta help them bones, too."
