BACKGROUND: Karida grew up as a handmaiden in the courts of Lady Ada. There she helped the princess and they grew quite close. Unfortunately, Ada was subjected to the fate that befalls many princesses, marriage. Any marriage was going to be largely political, the kingdom needed an ally to protect them from any uprisings or invasions. Karida was determined to win the princess for herself, but she had no army, or political power of her own so she announced her intentions to build up an army and left the castle, traveling to the island nations of Orshion. Orshion was a dark land full of warring fashions. Six different rulers lay claim to the entirety of the nation, many having come into rule of their lands through their own backstabbing, in many cases leaving the true ruler of the clan dead or in hiding. It was a dangerous place, but perfect for making a name for one’s self.
On her arrival, she set off to hire a few peasants who wished to also make a name for themselves. Deciding that looking for people likely to obey her in a port town was futile, she set off toward a small village. In order to prove herself worthy to lead anyone, she was directed to a small training ground where she was put to the test. She did well before being humiliated by a man named Sera, she quickly made up for the embarrassment and served it back twofold. After besting those at the training ground, she set out for the village again. However she fell asleep upon her horse and became lost. Awakening near a stream, she went to cure her thirst, but it was not to be as her drink was interrupted by a body floating down the river. She mounted her horse and galloped upriver to investigate.
She arrived at the scene after the fight had ended. Bandits had attacked a caravan and slaughtered the merchants. Seeing only two, she charged. However what she saw was deceptive. Several more bandits appeared. She urged her horse to turn but it was too late. A whistling arrow struck the horse and pierced its skull. She flew from it and struck her head on a stone and entered unconsciousness. She was the prisoner of the bandits, and was treated as such. In one instance she was pulled away from her reality and met a creature who was not human but took on the form of a beautiful woman. The creature promised Karida the princess’ hand, as well as great power in exchange for service. Karida gave herself to the creature, body and soul. When she was returned to her reality she broke free and slew her captors with the help of Sera who had stumbled upon the camp while tracking her. She seduced Sera into pledging loyalty to her but had no desire for the man. It was at this point that the creature for her again, sending a horse that was more demon then beast called Destry.
Sera began making her way across the island nation. She slew many bandits and became quite well known. Several Lords called for her service in their armies. She dismissed all of them. Then she encountered Kyra Doemins, true heir to one of the warring factions. She was pushed aside because she was a woman. Karida pledged herself to bringing about her ascension to the throne. The news of this travelled fast and many supporters of the usurper tried to hunt Karida down, attacking her while she travelled with her army and even using such cowardly tactics as sending assassins after her as she travelled about the towns. Yet her army continued to grow. She took one town, then another, and then a small stronghold, all in the name of Kyra Doemins. Soon other warring factions took notice. Some took advantage of the split focus and took more land for themselves from the usurper, others were less pleased that a woman came from nothing to become not only a landowner, but the guardian of a stronghold. It was not three months later that she made her mark by storming the castle where the Usurper lay. It was a bloody battle, but in the end, Karida triumphed and Kyra Doemins was anointed the new ruler of the faction. This sudden rise to power made the other factions nervous, they prepared for the worst. Karida gave it to them. First she took back the lands that had been taken while the usurper was in control, and then she mounted war on the smallest faction, quickly overwhelming them. Their greatest detractor, who was also the largest faction, began rallying the remaining four factions to unite against their common threat. The sudden action silenced everyone. In less than a month Karida’s soldiers had overwhelmed and overthrown them. While the nation was in disarray from the sudden transference of power, diplomacy took over and Karida had little left to do. The other factions quickly made peace and swore fealty in exchange for their own survival. Karida was given a position of power in the courts. While she was not true royalty, she was hailed as such.
However this did not interest her, she took Sera and ten score of her best soldiers back to her home across the sea to claim the princess as her own. She was too late. The princess had already been wed to a prince from a neighboring country. Karida’s rage was great and she acted without thinking. She destroyed several towns and villages, badly damaging the economy. Though maddened, attacking the castle with the princess was something she could not bring herself to do. Her rage left her and she fled back to Orshion. Upon returning she was rebuked for her actions and held as a prisoner for her home nation who sought out justice. She was freed by soldiers who were still loyal to her and she ordered the word spread that it was time to leave. All those soldiers who were still loyal to her left their posts and followed her. Their numbers were not small as she had done far more for them then Doemins. Severely weakened, fighting among the factions resumed and Karida allowed her soldiers to set up a faction of their own. She appointed a leader and set off in a ship with Sera and 20 of her most skilled warriors. She planned to leave this patch of the earth and go where none had heard of her. Helped along by the creature who had promised her something she could not have, she disappeared from one existence and arrived in a new one.
The journey was long and treacherous and she lost several soldiers. Yet she carried on. No longer did she desire to attain greatness, become well known, or even marry her princess. She now simply wanted to make a living off of what she knew how to do. With a bit of nudging fate by the creature she found herself in the employ of the King of Terre de Conte. He wanted her to sabotage the relationships built by Princess Anactoria and drive her back to the arms of men as was proper. The only stipulation was that she was not to harm the Princess in any way. Karida accepted the King’s proposal and went to work on her new objective.
