DOWN TO THE FINER POINTS
HEIGHT: 175cm/5'9"
WEIGHT: 54 kg/120 lbs
HAIR: Golden blond

GENERAL APPEARANCE: Physically, Laura feels confident about herself, though she has little idea what others think about her. She is taller than her sisters and even her mother, but she avoids assuming her figure above others'. She does occasionally become irritated with her delicate hair, especially given that she lacks the resources to keep it perfect in her current circumstances.
As far as fashion is concerned, Laura holds simplicity as policy. Though her dresses often taper, she avoids forcing into a shape with anything like corsets or tight bodices involved. As part of her living in Alonia, she wears a surcoat over wool dresses with collared chemises and lengthy petticoats. Outside of Alonia, where her fashion is not functionally necessary, she tends to remain in similar outfits, though she wears more cambric than wool in such circumstances, if possible. Because of the Alonian fashion, she endures being occasionally called prudish or plain by other peoples in Terre de Conte, confident that she fits neither description. She does, however, become frustrated with people who might think her haughty. Try as she might to avoid it, her posture and gait are inescapably higher class, a product of endless drills during her childhood. Though she tries to relax her appearance, it feels strange and uncomfortable.

PERSONALITY: Laura is the type of person who likes to observe the world around her only to later imagine and re-imagine something that fascinated her at some point or another. As such, she can look either curious or daydreamy to an observer. Given her relative quiet and the tall, noble way she unconsciously carries herself, however, she could be misinterpreted as aloof, which has happened to her on more than one occasion.
When dealing with others, she can be either distant or powerfully involved, depending on her mood. Regardless of mood or circumstance, her resilient curiosity usually keeps her kind. Knowing Laura, however, means knowing that she is like a flow of water underneath glistening ice; lots of feeling flow underneath a placid surface. Given a situation she feels strongly about, her calm gives way to a highly impassioned approach.

BACKGROUND: Generations ago, Alonia had been little more than a motte-and-bailey with a garrison defending a few dozen freezing families. Incentives rode on the wave of prosperity, created by the reign of Lady Ivory and Emperor Meander, for Alonia to grow and become a realized city, an economic center. Among those that relocated to Alonia were Laura's ancestors who were qualified craftswomen and craftsmen. Amongst them was Babs, the only one of the family to pursue a career as a merchant instead of a craftsperson. When the family moved, Babs was only a fruitier, but as the family worked and her first venture failed, she had an idea. What if she organized her multi-talented family towards specific projects instead of being dispersed by individual jobs? Within a year, Babs had become a powerful contractor and merchant. During the wave of construction projects, Babs and her family based much of their resource gathering in a large dell. To support the gathering and transporting of resources, the family made a temporary town for their and other workers' operations near Alonia. At the same time, Babs moved to buy up potential farmlands for when construction would slow down and when population would go up. By her golden years, Babs had secured an estate for her family as well as a new name for those who would come after her: Delton, after the worker town at the dell where the family's success had begun.
Many years later, a young woman calling herself Babs runs a stand in Alonia, even during the dangerously cold winter months. She sells collections of the city's commoners' short stories and poetry with a new edition ready every month. While each volume is only simple paper with string binding, she personally handwrites each copy with a hand practiced in fine calligraphy. At the end of the day, the woman goes home to a one-room house with stone floors and a leaky shingle roof. The smell of vomit sometimes seeps through the wattle and daub walls of the old house from the tavern next door, but it does little to disturb her dreamily pensive feelings. She puts up her coat, starts a fire, and soon her pen is at work again. Her furnishings and her wardrobe are modest, but they fill her with pride at having earned them. At a higher point in Alonia, the Deltons enjoy a multi-course dinner. An extra seat at the table is always vacant. When the Deltons look at it for too long, mixed feelings come from it. They remember the night Laura left the seat, amidst heightened voices and reddened faces, and marched out the gates of the estate with only her dress, surcoat, and a pinch of coins.
