BACKGROUND: The reason Maire has no siblings is that her mother died in childbirth with Maire's younger brother, who was stillborn. Her father raised her, but died when she was seventeen. She moved (down the stairs) to live with her uncle, a merchant like her father.
Maire is at the castle looking for work, so that she will be able to be near the princess, who she would like to try her hand at wooing, although her station is low enough that she is fairly sure she has no chance.
