Iphie hadn't wanted to do this but Dusty was just so enthusiastic and so very convincing that she felt she had to. Of course now that she found herself retracing steps near two months old she felt sick to her stomach and her ribs, now healed, seemed to ache. Still she pressed on, the light jostling of her shield covered in cloth and strapped to her back made her feel a lot better. She'd also picked up a few stones that would be good for throwing and those gave her confidence as well.
It took some time, Iphie had forgotten how long she had walked while in the unpleasant mood that had taken her outside the city. Still, they arrived at the small copse of woods, mercifully free of bodies. Iphie let out a sigh of relief, though she tried to hide it from Dusty, she didn't want to show weakness in front of her, really she wanted to impress the other woman. Still, everytime she had closed her eyes since agreeing to this journey she had seen everything untouched from when she had left it.
After two months she shouldn't have been surprised but she was. "This is it Dusty. They were all camped out around here when I encountered them."

It hadn't been easy, but Dusty had convinced Iphie to show her around the scene of the attack. There were many reasons to be coming back. Chief of which was the eventual rebuilding of Iphie's confidence. To be defeated always had it's impacts. So, she would have to help her friend defeat the memory of her loss by giving her the tools she would need, should a fight with this mercenary ever occur again.
And Dusty would certainly be looking for a fight. Attacking strangers for no reason. That wasn't something she could just let go by, especially when it was happening to one of her friends. Payback was in order, and she was going to make certian Iphie got her's.
When they arrived, the detective to quick a view. Chances were very low that the scene itself would not yield any interesting details. But, it was still the worth the effort. After two months things were bound to have been all cleaned up, but it was the smaller details that often got over looked.
"So it is..." Dusty nodded, tilting her hat towards the back if her head, "Well, this ain't gonna be easy, but tell me what happened again. I'd like a good picture o' what went down here. Where exactly was everyone when ya first saw 'em? Just tell me as best ya can."

Iphie tried to remember everything, it was for Dusty so she had to make sure she got everything important. "Alright, so I had been having one of my...umm...well one of my bad weeks. I was going to lose it if I stayed in the castle so I left the city to walk. I feel a lot better if I'm off on my own you know?" Mostly because there's nobody that dies if I lose control she decided not to add.
"When I was walking I passed by this area and there were a bunch of soldiers sitting in the tree shade. They...propositioned me. I guess they thought I was a prostitute. When I refused they got physical. So I killed them. The men who were doing it I mean. There were women too. When I killed the men the women attacked. I'm not used to that, most people run away after I've...killed people they can see."
Iphie looked at the ground, partially to help remember but mostly out of shame. She didn't like talking about this to people and revealing what she could do. "I killed them too. But there was one man who had been hanging back. I think he was one of the commanders. He attacked me then and I fought him. I split his head open and he kept going. It just sort of healed. I killed him then. I had to do something. So I...killed him." She didn't want to discuss the details of that one.
"After he was dead I couldn't defend myself. I had sort of given my last when a woman came out of the woods. She was the real leader I think. I couldn't do anything to protect myself and she..."
Iphie couldn't go on. Her breath was getting shallow and it was all she could do to keep steady, if not calm. "I finally forced myself into action and ran. I got out of it with broken ribs and some other damage." She tried to remember anything else. "After she first approached me she seemed friendly. Like proud that I had killed those soldiers. She told me I would be a good replacement."

Dusty listened intently. And as she did looked around the setting. As Iphie described the events, she tried to picture it. The soldiers under the tree and then surrounding the sickly looking girl. An assumed easy mark. Not to mention the advantage of numbers. But, the unexpected happened to them. And, in turn, it happened to Iphie. There were two people that were able to counter her bizzare abilities.
The first was captain or a liuetenat. Although the rank seemed irrelevant. Whatever the case he was a second in command. The real threat was the leader. This strange woman who had badly beaten Iphigenia.
This meant that she possesed a power greater than her second in command. That much was obvious. What wasn't obvious was the source of this power. Did it come fromthe leader or was there another source? Would there be a way to counter act this power?
Dusty would need more details. Although it seemed that Iphie had exhausted her supply of information.
"Well. It's not impossible to beat them." she spoke aloud, "If we can learn more about this woman, we can work a strategy that will beat her."
There wasn't much left of the camp. Nothing useful at all. Still, that didn't mean there couldn't be a complete absense of clues.
"Which way did she come in from?" she asked, looking around again, "If she wasn't hanging 'round her team, she musta set up camp someplace else. Maybe someplace a bit more private. Could still be somethin' there if nobody's lookin' for it."

"Umm, well." Iphie glanced around and tried to remember. She had been in no condition to identify much after she had killed the second in command. "Well she came from over here I think." Iphie walked over to one side of the path and gestured into the thick trees. "She stepped out of here after I...killed the man. She was clapping so I think she was watching the whole time, or at least part of it."
Iphie didn't want to go into the forest. She hadn't had good experiences there even after the first one and it was locked in her mind as an even worse place to spend time. Still, she didn't want to show it to Dusty. "Do you think we should go and investigate?" She hoped the answer was no, or a least that she wouldn't have to go alone.

"Either way, it was long enough to get a good appraisal of your skills." Dusty nodded. She looked at thick collection of trees and then back to Iphie. It was a look she had seen on a lot of soldiers, before. When faced with strange and terrible enemies, there was always a notable shift in demeanor. Some were subtle, like Iphie's, others were quite more visibly shaken.
"Alright then, let's head on in." the detective encouraged. She took the lead, seeing as how this location wasn't doing much for her confidence. Not to mention they both had the same level of knowledge of what lay beyond. So Dusty shoved aside some branches and started the search.
The only good thing about all of the surrounding foilage was that as soon as they located a clearing, it would be reasonable to assume they had found the camp site.

Iphie was really glad to have Dusty along with her, at first she was weary of almost every sound but soon she was able to relax and be a bit more help in the looking around. Still they didn't find anything. As time went by, Iphie began to think that there was no camp to find. She decided to voice her thoughts.
"Dusty, the soldiers that I saw hadn't set up camp and it was the middle of he afternoon. I think it was more of a rest stop than anything else. That would mean there isn't a separate camp to find. I should have thought of that earlier, sorry." Iphie really was sorry, because she hadn't put all the dots together they had been wasting time.

"Hm...you might be right." Dusty pondered, "Well, camp or no camp, they stopped and their commander wanted to be outta the way. That could mean she was up to somethin'...now that somethin' coulda been anything from shinin' her boots ta buryin' some loot or even just doin' her business. Either way, it can't hurt to look. At best, we get some good info. At worst, it's a pleasant stroll through the woods."
She turned to toss a grin back Iphie's way. She was still unsure of herself and Dusty could understand. This was only the first step in getting some confidence back her way. And it was slowly starting to work. Dusty could be patient.
"Let's poke around a bit more. Can't hurt to be sure, right?"

Well yeah, I suppose being thorough is important in your line of work." Being thorough was important in her line too, at least part of it. Iphie wasn't exactly sure what her line of work really was. She was supposed to seduce the princess but she had doubts that would ever happen which left the library and archives. She wouldn't be copying it, not enough time to do that sort of thing.
As her mind wandered, she had stopped paying much attention to her surroundings. She was just walking around and looking at the ground, but even if there were clues to find, she wouldn't have noticed, however she also ended up brushing a few trees. Mostly she avoided them, but there were times when her shoulder would come up against a tree. It wasn't a huge effect but when it was shoulder versus tree trunk, the trunk would give first. Generally with a small creak before she was out of the way and the tree could resume its life undisturbed.

Iphie was quite visably distracted. Even without the occaisonal smack into a tree, Dusty could tell. She kept her in the corner of her eye as she continued the hunt for clues. It wasn't easy and, in fact, was looking like a exercise in futility. She would have to cut her losses soon and call it a day. At least with what she had learned so far, she could start making the rounds with all the merc hang outs. Someone was bound to have heard of this mystery woman.
(OOC: anything in particular of Karida's that Dusty should find?)
